Why consider an American Hairless Terrier?
Have you always wanted a dog but suffered from allergy? Do you desire canine company but really wish the commitment came without the requirement of a lint roller and a Romba? Meet the American Hairless Terrier.
Described as intelligent, loyal, and infectiously playful, the AHT is a perfect companion. “When it comes to the American Hairless Terrier, the absence of fur is far outweighed by the abundance of affection they bring into our lives,” Craig Stropkay, an owner of three American Hairless Terriers, joked. “Not only are they unique in appearance, they offer unconditional love and affection; they are hilarious, and, let’s face it, a lot less vacuuming and grooming is required.”
Craig has always loved animals but was unable to keep one of his own due to his allergies. When his wife discovered the breed, they added their first AHT to the family almost immediately and Craig has not had any allergic reactions whatsoever. Since then, they have added two more to the crew. The only real problem with the breed as oft noted in the AHT community is that they are like potato chips….You can’t have just one.
“They are smart, loving and loyal and great watch dogs,” offered Josie Speckart, a Vermont resident, and, lifelong owner and breeder and exhibitor of other breeds. “We now have two and they are the only ones that sleep in the bed.”
The American Hairless Terrier has been recognized by the American Kennel Club since 2016. Avid AHT enthusiasts have competed in confirmation, obedience, and rally but most recently and notably in dock diving, agility and Fast Cat.
AHTS are extremely loyal to their owners but also play well with other animals and love children. American Hairless Terriers enjoy outside play as much as time on the couch and can go for long hikes, join for a jog, or even hang out on a paddle board or in a kayak so long as their people, or, even more people, are about. In fact, AHTS loves socializing anywhere. They are at home at the local hardware store and are always excited for a car ride, RV adventure, camping, or even fancy hotels.
Craig and his wife, who reside outside of Boston, travel regularly throughout New England and Costa Rica and have no problem bringing their dogs into hotel rooms. Sure, they like to romp on the bed, but the good news is they leave no trace. “No fur, no problem!” Craig laughed.
AHTs are unique among “hairless” varieties in terms of appearance and feel. Local breeder Melanie Bell, of Claremont, New Hampshire, describes them as downright luxurious with a texture of fine suede as opposed to leathery. After a long day, there is no better sensation than an AHT resting beside you. They always seem to know where to lay when you are stressed or tired.
They do require a little sunscreen in the summer to protect their velvety skin from the harsh rays, and the occasional winter sweater, but who secretly doesn’t want an excuse to put a sweater on a dog at Christmas?
